Jodi Ellen Malpas has done it again. First The Brit. Then The Enigma. And now The Resurrection, when The Brit – aka Danny Black – and The Enigma – aka James Kelly – team up to take down The Bear. Yes, it’s a flipping mobster menagerie down in Miami, and when Danny returns from the dead to help James settle an old score, all hell breaks loose.
The Resurrection is the third book in JEM’s Unlawful Men series and if you’ve read the first two books you already know that Danny and James aren’t your ordinary guys. There’s a reason this series is called the Unlawful Men series; Danny and James have lived very hard lives, but they live by a code and that code puts them at the top of the food chain.
In the third book of the series their lives are more complicated because they both have women they love more than anything on the planet, and they will do anything to protect their women, no matter what.
The Resurrection features four points of view: Danny, Rose, James and Beau. JEM manages all four voices – all four very distinct voices – with astonishing dexterity. She flows effortlessly between scenes, offering perspectives from multiple points of view. The result is a 499-page opus of violence and revenge, of love and lust. Of two men who would do anything to protect the women they love.
I want to take a moment to acknowledge JEM’s dedication at the beginning of the book: “To every alpha I have created and to those I am yet to dream up.” This from the woman who gave us Jesse Ward and so many Alphas… As if Jesse, James and Danny (to name a few) weren’t enough, can you imagine the other Alphas yet to come? (Pun intended!)
Look, I know I read at a freakish pace, but I truly mean it when I say that I couldn’t put this book down. As soon as it popped up in my library I started reading voraciously, committed to finishing the book as quickly as I could because I needed to know what happened. I won’t spoil the ending, of course, but I will say the ending is nothing short of jaw-dropping.
If you’ve been following along with Danny and James so far, The Resurrection should be at the top of your TBR. I can’t wait to see what Jodi Ellen Malpas is working on next!
