Fans of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series have been waiting with bated breath for Black Dagger Brotherhood season 2. The Passionflix adaptation of Lover Eternal features the love story between Rhage (Alexander Cubis) and Mary (Audrey Hare). I had a chance to speak with Cubis and Hare ahead of the season premiere about the one key scene or moment they knew had to be “perfect” for fans.
Passionflix fans know that one of the trademarks of the romance streamer is that books are adapted lovingly and authentically. That means following the story as closely as possible. Since fans already know what happens in the story, the appeal of the series is more about seeing the characters and key scenes come to life. With that in mind, I asked Cubis and Hare which key scene they felt had to be perfect, particularly knowing the importance of the story to the BDB fandom.
“For me, it was the scene between Rhage and Mary when they’re at Bella’s (Mariah Davis) house,” Hare said. “Rhage comes and she basically tells [him] that she doesn’t want him to see her deteriorate in her sickness because she loves him. And that just really hit home for me as an individual. When I was reading that in the book, I cried. I just wanted to really honor that, and I think we did.”
“She kills it as well,” Cubis added, “Audrey’s performance in that scene. Even thinking about it, I think we really enjoyed it as actors. On that day [of filming], I think we went there and honored the story. Yeah, I’m so excited for the audience to see that.
“I think, similarly, there was a scene that was on my second day of filming that’s the all is lost moment for Rhage,” Cubis continued. “I don’t want to give away too much, but it happens in the final episode and it’s with the Scribe Virgins so the fans of the book will know what that is. And I knew that if I didn’t get the scene done right, especially because we filmed it so early on — it’s one of the last scenes in the series — I knew that if I did justice to that one, the rest of the journey and the rest of the story would flow well.”
