A24 released a teaser for the upcoming thriller Backrooms from writer/director Kane Parsons and it’s every bit as off-putting and disturbing as you’d hope it would be. And I can’t wait to see it.
I’d never heard of liminal spaces and “the backrooms” until I watched the season 3 episode of American Horror Stories called, you guessed it, “Backrooms.” The episode features Michael Imperioli as a Hollywood screenwriter grappling with the disappearance of his young son. He finds himself transported into a terrifying space where he’s forced to confront his secrets.
There aren’t many details about A24’s Backrooms, other than it’s a movie based on Kane Parsons’ web series. As it happens, Parsons’ web series was inspired by the “Backrooms” Creepypasta story. Parsons’ videos feature people filming their journey through cavernous, empty spaces that defy logic. A quick search reveals that Parsons’ videos have inspired other creators to capture their experiences with backrooms and liminal spaces.

As you can see, there is lots of open space and lots of foreshadowing leading up to…what? There’s no way of knowing where these places are or who created them, and that’s what makes them so terrifying. This is one movie I’m very eager to see.
Backrooms features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia. It arrives in theaters on May 29, 2026.
