When Talking Dead makes an announcement about a big announcement, the TWD Family listens. With Scott M. Gimple and Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Ian Goldberg on hand, the special guest turned out to be none other than Kim Dickens herself and the big news is that Madison Clark is coming back to the fold in 7B as a series regular. The show was also officially renewed for season 8.
Madison Clark was “killed” in season 4 after she made a stand against walkers at the ballpark while her family escaped to safety. Fans were quick to point out that there was never proof that she died; in the world of The Walking Dead, you’re not dead until there’s a body. Or a walker.
Dickens’ departure in 2018 led to an outcry from some fans who equated the Clark matriarch with Rick Grimes on The Walking Dead. Nick Clark (Frank Dillane) was killed in season 4 as well, leaving Alycia Debnam-Carey’s Alicia Clark as the last Clark standing.
Until now.
I’ve always said that the showrunners could always find a way to bring Madison back, but there is little reason to spoil the surprise until the time is right. With her return targeted for the second half of season 7, now is the perfect time to make the big announcement.
Another reason it makes sense to announce her return now is that it prevents the news from being spoiled if Dickens is spotted in Austin, Texas, where the show films. This was the case with Lennie James, whose transition to Fear the Walking Dead was announced on Talking Dead so that no one was surprised when he showed up in Austin.
The show attempted to keep Austin Amelio’s move to Fear TWD a secret but it was spoiled without a chance to make an announcement, so it really makes sense that AMC would put the news out in the world to give fans something to talk about until the second half of season 7 returns on April 17.
