When I was in college there were girls who joked about studying in the School of Law’s dedicated library because it was like shopping for a husband. When Lottie finds herself out of work and out of options, she finds herself strolling through Beverly Hills with the half-cooked idea of finding a rich husband. Huxley Cane is trying to clear his head when he goes for a walk and he ends up colliding – literally – with the solution to his problem. Thus begins Meghan Quinn’s hilarious romantic comedy A Not So Meet Cute.
Huxley needs a fake fiance – a pregnant one, no less – to impress a potential client. He only has a few days to find one or risk losing a chance to do business with this elusive client, so when Lottie comes along it seems to be a perfect match. The only problem is that she’s not so sure it’s a good idea, even though she’d been out wandering through the Beverly Hills neighborhood to begin with.
Once the contracts are signed, they enter into their fake relationship, but neither one is prepared for the feelings that come with having to pretend to be in love.
A Not So Meet Cute is a delightful blend of the Fake Fiance, Enemies to Lovers and Grumpy and Sunshine tropes. At least, that’s how I see it. Lottie really can’t stand Huxley but she’s willing to go along with his harebrained scheme because she needs his help, too. Plus, she signed a contract. Huxley needs Lottie’s help, too, but having her around all the time makes him realize how empty his life was without her.
Quinn does a phenomenal job developing Lottie and Huxley into very dimensional, very complex characters. She also has no problem putting this fake couple through the wringer, throwing them into some unbelievably hilarious situations. (I’m still laughing at the baby care class. Poor Lottie and Huxley!)
I’m so glad I happened upon A Not So Meet Cute while going down a rabbit hole on Amazon. You never know what treasures you’ll find and in this case as soon as I read the description I knew I had to buy it. I wasn’t disappointed. My only regret is reading it so fast because I had to know what happened. That’s always the biggest indicator of whether I’m into a book or not. I needed to know how the story ended, so much that I powered through it (and was frustrated when I had to put it down to do other things).
If you’re looking for a fun book about two people who come together under bizarre circumstances but end up making the most of it, then A Not So Meet Cute is the book for you!
