A Discovery of Witches season 3 is prestige television at its finest. Season 3 is going to be a very wild ride!
The third and final season of A Discovery of Witches arrives January 8 on AMC+, Shudder and Sundance Now. AMC made the first two episodes available to reviewers and I can tell you that they do not disappoint.
As a fan of Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy, the first two episodes of season 3 were an absolute delight to watch even though they deal with some very heavy subject matter.
Season 3 picks up on the heels of the season 2 finale. Diana (Teresa Palmer) and Matthew (Matthew Goode) have just returned to Sept Tours from 1590 to find that Peter Knox (Owen Teale) has fatally wounded Diana’s aunt Emily (Valarie Pettiford). Sept Tours is on high alert as the rest of the de Clermont family waits to see what Matthew will do now that the sacred covenant has been broken and blood has been shed at the family’s home.
After three seasons, the ADOW cast really shines in the final season. Though tension in season 3 is at an all-time high, the performances are off the charts. Newcomer Peter McDonald, who replaces Trystan Gravelle, has the unenviable job of playing an even more cantankerous Baldwin in season 3 but he’s absolutely brilliant.
The action moves quickly; there’s a lot to unpack after Diana and Matthew’s trip to 1590 and once they return to the present there is a lot they have to deal with. The first episode gets Matthew and Diana caught up with the present and the second episode moves the story deeper into the events of The Book of Life, the third book of the All Souls Trilogy.
If the first two episodes are any indication, season 3 is going to be intense. It’s hard to imagine saying goodbye to these characters…but I’m holding out hope that Sky TV will option Deborah Harkness’ other books so the story can continue.
