There was a major death in The Vampire Lestat episode 2, and even though it took place off screen it will have a ripple effect into the show’s future for both Lestat (Sam Reid) and Louis (Jacob Anderson).
In “Toledo,” Raglan James (Justin Kirk) and Rashid (Bally Gill) show up at Louis (Jacob Anderson) and Daniel’s (Eric Bogosian) post-concert meetup. The two Talamasca agents are looking for Louis’ help dealing with the Detroit coven that wreaked havoc at the hotel after Lestat’s concert, and they think Louis is the perfect vampire for the job given his past history of eradicating problematic covens.
It’s during this conversation that Raglan James mentions that Louis killed Talamasca member David Talbot, to which Louis replies that he’ll kill anyone who goes after him first. This implies that Talbot came after Louis for some unknown reason.
In book canon, David is the Superior General of the Talamasca. He’s an old man by the time Lestat starts calling upon him, enticing him with offers of the Dark Gift, which David always refuses. When Lestat needs help, David is there for him. When Lestat enters into a disastrous deal with Raglan James to switch bodies in The Tale of the Body Thief, David is the one who helps Lestat get his vampire body back. In the process, David ends up taking over Raglan James’ much younger body and Lestat makes him into a vampire.
The shocking revelation in “Toledo” changes what’s coming up for Lestat as the Vampire Chronicles continue to play out on screen.
How David Talbot’s death impacts Louis
We don’t know much about Agent David Talbot or his death in the AMC television series. Rolin Jones mentioned the character’s death in The Vampire Lestat: After Dark companion series, noting that his team talked with the Talamasca: The Secret Order team about their attachment to the character and ultimately decided that they could kill him off. “We went for it. He’s gone,” Jones said.
What’s interesting here is that it’s Louis who kills him. Suddenly, Louis has become this legendary vampire enforcer, killing anyone who gets in his way. Historically, Louis was known to be something of a pacifist in the vampire world; killing the Theatre des Vampires coven was an act of revenge but was not part of a pattern of behavior.
For some reason, Agent Talbot came after Louis and was killed. Louis killed a member of the Talamasca, and that definitely changes a lot about his reputation and the way he’s viewed by both the vampire world and the Talamasca itself.
How David Talbot’s death impacts Lestat’s story
If we’re lucky enough to have more books adapted in the future, then The Tale of the Body Thief follows on the heels of Queen of the Damned. A world weary Lestat is given a chance at being a mortal man again by switching bodies with Raglan James, and it leads to another very unique and very on-brand Lestat adventure.
With David Talbot dead, Lestat will need a new companion in the Talamasca. Or, perhaps he won’t have a Talamasca friend at all. The reason David was a perfect fit for this adventure was that as a seasoned Talamasca agent, he had an abundance of knowledge that could help Lestat retrieve his wayward vampiric body.
Losing Talbot doesn’t have to change Lestat’s trajectory in The Tale of the Body Thief, but it does open the door for a new key character to be introduced. We’ve seen this already in Mayfair Witches; book-canon Aaron Lightner was replaced by a new character, Ciprien Grieve (Tongayi Chirisa).
The revelation that David Talbot is dead in the TV show canon put fans on notice that there will be changes ahead if and when Lestat’s journey moves into the fourth book of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. It will be interesting to see what Rolin Jones and his team have planned now that new of Talbot’s demise is out in the world.
