Will The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4 End With a TWD Reunion?

Though The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 won’t arrive until 2027, the TWD Family is already speculating about what the final season holds. A teaser and series of first look stills reveal that Daryl (Norman Reedus) is in rough shape and Carol (Melissa McBride) is still a badass. But that’s about it. Given that Daryl Dixon will be riding off into the sunset with season 4, we have to wonder whether a TWD reunion is in the cards.

As per usual, the present-day timeline across The Walking Dead Universe is hazy, to say the least. Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) reunited in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live while Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) story continues in The Walking Dead: Dead City, now in its third season. Dead City is said to be taking place in the future while The Ones Who Live doesn’t take place too far after the end of the original series. Daryl Dixon is somewhere in between, with Carol and Daryl in Europe before Rick and Michonne returned.

Daryl and Carol have no idea that Rick is back. As far as we know, Maggie and Negan don’t know it, either. It’s hard to believe that the TWD Powers That Be (aka Scott M. Gimple) wouldn’t want to end Daryl and Carol’s spinoff with a huge reunion.

Then again, after Daryl Dixon bows, the only show in the TWD Universe still standing will be Dead City – provided it gets picked up for a fourth season. This leads us to wonder if there’s another TWD spinoff in the future.

The Walking Dead reunion possibilities

After covering The Walking Dead for well over a decade, I can’t imagine that AMC Global is going to allow the TWD Universe to wind down without a reunion…or at all. Once upon a time we had three to four series running year-round. Sure, the main flagship series is long over and two of the three spinoffs are either over or about to be over. Now seems like a good time to announce a spinoff, or two, or three…and a massive TWD reunion would be the best place to start.

It’s hard to figure out where a TWD reunion spinoff would fit, but late 2028 seems to be a good guess. If Dead City comes back for one more season that somehow airs in late 2027 or early 2028, then placing the reunion with all of the spinoff cast members and as many TWD alums available to return seems like a reasonable possibility. Create some big threat that forces everyone to come together. This would allow Maggie and Negan to join in. Heck, the whole gang might move to Manhattan and make it their new home base before signing off once and for all.

I’m honestly not so sure the big reunion will come at the end of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4. I think it’s more likely that the show will end with a giant tease, perhaps with Rick and Michonne standing in the distance as Carol and Daryl make their way home. I just can’t see AMC not using the opportunity for a huge, end-all-be-all reunion spinoff series to give fans the “ending” they deserve before looking ahead at the future of the franchise.

The future of The Walking Dead

From there, who knows? I don’t think AMC is ready to let The Walking Dead go just yet. There are still stories to be told, but they just won’t have the same names on the call sheet.

I’ve been contemplating what the future of the TWD Universe could look like and I have an idea: AMC might consider a spinoff about the next generation of people growing up in the apocalypse. But not just any next generation…a very specific group of youngsters who came of age in the apocalypse before our eyes.

What I envision here is a spinoff about the now-grown youngsters: Judith, RJ, Gracie and everyone else who is still around. Hershel (Logan Kim) could make the jump from Dead City to this TWD: The Next Generation spinoff. Their parents could appear as guest stars…I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Aaron (Ross Marquand) back in action along with the other OGs of the TWD?

And yes, the World Beyond cast can join in, too. At this point, moving into the future with the next generation of familiar-but-new characters would be a refreshing way to keep the torch lit while making it possible for other beloved characters to pop in.
