San Diego Comic-Con Special Edition is here, and SDCC fans will be able to do something they haven’t been able to do in a very long time: Buy tickets at the door.
Once upon a time it was possible to walk into the San Diego Convention Center and buy a ticket to San Diego Comic-Con on the spot. The Exhibit Hall wasn’t crowded and getting into Hall H was a breeze. It has been a long time since SDCC fans have been able to do that, but after two years of virtual conventions the pop culture juggernaut is back, and this time tickets are available at the door.
SDCC Special Edition is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to host a convention in San Diego after two years of virtual conventions. The event opens on Friday, November 26 and runs through Sunday, and while fans are eager to get back to SDCC the timing of the event has made for a difficult choice. Do you attend a special SDCC event, or do you travel for Thanksgiving after missing the opportunity to see family last year?
It’s a big conflict to be sure, with many longtime fans opting out so that they can be with loved ones for the holiday instead of making the trip. Hollywood would seem to agree given that there are no big panels planned, and indeed the Exhibit Hall floor will be missing booths from all the big players.
In fact, for the first time in a very long time, SDCC will only occupy about half of the Convention Center floor.
While it’s entirely understandable that many people want to spend the holiday weekend with family, the event does have an upside. It’s a chance to return to the SDCC roots, with a smaller convention geared toward comics and collectibles. It will have more of a pre-2008 (aka pre-Twilight) vibe to it, which is refreshing considering how packed the event can be.
For all intents and purposes, SDCC Special Edition is a standalone event designed to give people a chance to get back to the convention that they love while also giving retailers a chance to make some money at the start of the holiday season.
