Eagle-eyed fans of The Vampire Lestat might notice something missing from episode 2, “Toledo,” after watching The Vampire Lestat: After Dark episode “After Toledo.” During a discussion about Lestat and Louis’ reunion, host Lizzy Bassett asks Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson about the scene and video shows pages from the script. However, upon closer examination, the dialogue in question has been cut from the episode.
Reid shares how much he loved the interstitial dialogue between Lestat and Louis in the scene. He thought some of the dialogue would have been shared through Lestat’s narration but said Rolin Jones surprised him and had it play out between the actors instead.
Anderson added that the interstitial dialogue revealed a fun fact about Louis and Armand’s relationship: they hung out with British actress Julie Christie.
But here’s the thing: that conversation never played out in the actual episode. Here’s the dialogue in question, as seen in the After Dark episode:
Lestat: And is this right, you had a second home in Sausalito with him?
Louis: I did.
Lestat: Sausalito?! Did you play canasta with Shel Silverstein?
Louis: Didn’t know Shel. Went kayaking once with Julie Christie.
Lestat (cont’d): Did you two have a joint bank account?!
Louis: We shared a frigid, indifferent existence on both sides of the bay.
Again, looking back at the episode itself, this little tidbit was left on the cutting room floor. This once again suggests that After Dark was filmed well before the episodes went through their final edit.
We also know that the after show was filmed prior to when Talamasca: The Secret Order was cancelled in late March. There have been several references to the show in the three After Dark episodes so far and it is referred to in the present tense, suggesting that it hadn’t been cancelled yet.
Just as the show is loaded with Easter Eggs, it looks like there are quite a few nuggets hidden away in After Dark as well. What this means is that there’s likely a whole bunch of footage that didn’t make it to air. Let’s hope we get to see all of the deleted scenes at some point, either in extended episodes or director’s cuts.
The Vampire Lestat airs Sundays at 9pm ET/PT on AMC and streams same day on AMC+. After Dark streams Sundays on AMC+.
